Alan Graham MacDiarmid ONZ (1927-2007) was a Victoria B.Sc. Honours graduate from 1949 who went on to great things including (in collaboration with the Japanese chemist Hideki Shirakawa and the American physicist Alan Heeger) the discovery and development of conductive polymers. The trio shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. Although much of his professional life was spent at the University of Pennsylvania, and more recently also at the University of Texas, Dallas, MacDiarmid maintained a strong association with New Zealand, and his Nobel Prize medal is on display in the MacDiarmid building at Victoria University of Wellington.
